When wet soil is combined with conventional tillage, the result is often compaction and erosion; on the other hand, cover crops absorb excess moisture, suppress weeds, and add biomass. The farmer will test an integrated system of strip tillage and cover crops, and more specifically strip tillage that results in a narrow seed bed suitable for small-seeded vegetable crops. The goal is to see if there is improvement in crop yield or marketability and to offer a reduced-tillage model that can be used across a wide variety of vegetable crops. Outreach will be through extension, an educational field day, a web presentation, and a conference.
