Asparagus, and important regional crop, is a perennial and can be weedy. The farmer will test whether hens can help control grasses and broadleaf weeds after the harvest is complete and also whether a ten-foot buffer zone sown with oats or winter rye will reduce perennial weeds in asparagus beds. By comparing controls with test plots, the farmer will determine optimal chicken density and cover crop effectiveness; outreach will be through a growers' organization, a conference, and extension.
