Efficient and safe food handling for small-scale vegetable producers

Some small- and medium-sized farmers perceive food safety certification to be complex, scale-inappropriate, and a burden to implement, but good handling practices matter to consumers and affect quality. The project manager will assess area farm practices, develop scale-appropriate examples of good practices and procedures, and support farmers as they improve how they harvest and package what they sell. Outreach will be through farm tours and farmer meetings, videos, the distribution of improved guidelines and safety plans, presentations by participating farmers, and material sent to the agricultural media, posted on the web, and available at farmer and distributor events.
