How to use season extension effectively for winter market sales: Investigating planting dates, types of covers, and fertility

Grant ID Number: ONE10-115
Grant Recipient: Robert Hadad, Cornell University, Lockport NY

The demand for local food makes season extension a profitable option, but a wide range of questions deserve more investigation. The project manager will use low tunnels to explore which varieties work well, planting dates, fertility requirements, optimal soil temperatures, and the effect of decreasing light levels and nitrate toxicity. Cooperating farmers will participate in outreach through twilight meetings and results will also be offered to regional farm newspapers and posted to the web, with further potential for a conference presentation.

Grant Amount: $12,417
