Weed control on vegetable farms is primarily addressed through cultivation, which uses both labor and fuel and can also degrade soil, affecting about 2000 farms in southern New England. The project manager will conduct cover-cropping trials and offer workshops and twilight meetings on how perennial and summer cover crops can be integrated into vegetable production. As a result, 200 growers will learn about new varieties and production methods and 20 vegetable growers will adopt a combination of cover crops, living mulches, and zone tillage on at least 10 percent of their acreage; in addition 50 agriculture students will get hands-on training through their participation in research trials.
