Oilseed can be used for food, livestock meal, and biodiesel, and is an appropriate crop for the climate in New England. The project manager will work with current and potential oilseed farmers to improve pest management, yields, and quality, and to facilitate farmer-to-farmer learning about oilseed potential. An experienced oilseed producer will establish research and demonstration trials, and oilseed research will be used to develop a new web-based growers' guide for farmers. By the end of 2012, 50 additional farmers will include oilseeds in their rotations, planting 500 additional acres, and will have adopted at least on new pest management practice to minimize bird and weed damage and double yields, increasing income $112,500 for these farms.
