Northeast organic wheat growers need varieties adapted to local conditions and markets, and this project will train farmers in on-farm wheat trials, selection, and how to identify superior varieties that can be adapted to organic cultivation. The project manager will bring together farmers, wheat breeders, extension staff, millers, bakers, and other to consider weed resilience, grain weight per plant, resistance to disease, and ability to thrive under weather extremes. If the 120 farmers involved in the project, 60 will try new grain varieties over 1000 acres; of the 60, 24 will use promising wheat varieties as the basis for enhanced marketing.
