Nutrient management on organic vegetable farms: A research and education program for sustainable soil fertility management in southern New England

Grant ID Number: LNE09-285
Grant Recipient: Beth Hooker, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley MA

Organic vegetable growers use manures and composts for soil fertility, but recent research indicates that N and P levels on these farm fields tend to be too high. To address this, the project manager will create a soil test for organic vegetable farms and work closely with growers to address nutrient management issues by offering education on this topic for organic farmers. Of the 225 organic vegetable farmers involved, 50 will use nutrient management planning and soil testing to optimize soil fertility, minimize environmental impacts, and maximize profitability on 540 acres.
