As farmland becomes fragmented and expensive, leasing land is often the remaining option for farmers to expand or for new farmers to get established; at the same time, towns, land trusts, and non-farming landowners are looking to improve how they manage idle or under-used acreage. The project manager will develop a statewide guide, in collaboration with farmers, that will describe leasing options, offer case studies, and support tenancy agreements that improve farm viability. Outreach will be through the distribution of this guide through farmers, the state department of agriculture, meetings, workshops, town governments, and land trusts.
